Every now and then, we hear about a blogger who has gained some level of fame and has started charging for advertising.

Not that it would ever happen to me, but I do wonder “How much is a fair amount to charge?” Supposing a blog has 30,000 pageviews a month, how much would an advertiser pay?

According to Allan Levy, “banner impression revenue should generate between $1 and $5 per 1,000 impressions”.

So for a site that’s doing 30,000 pageviews a month, we’re talking about a paltry $30 – $150 a month!

I think back to year 2000, we were charging $50 for 1,000 impressions. Some rate cards still show those rates. But advertisers are wiser now. They know it’s just a lot of hot air. The reality is that if you spend enough money, we’ll give you tens or sometimes hundreds of thousands of page impressions for free.
